Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to fly a drone?

You do not need to register if you will only use the drone or model aircraft that weighs below  250g and is a toy, or, does not have a camera.

For up-to-date information from the CAA please click here.

How high can drones fly?

400 feet unless you have special authorisations.

What does heavy lift mean?

Heavy lift is a drone that has a payload that weighs 10 lbs or more. They can be used to transport medical equipment but more commonly lifting heavy duty cameras used for photography and videography.

What does maximum take off mass mean?

Maximum Take-off mass (MToM) means the total weight the drone can take off. This is a combined total of the weight of the drone, and the gimbal (Payload) used. It is otherwise abbreviated as the MTOM – Maximum Take of Mass or an alternatively known as Maximum Take off Weight (MTOW).

Can a roof survey be completed in the rain?

Almost all drones are not able to fly in the rain, sleet or snow. However, here at Ace High Drone Specialists, we have purchased the new DJI Matrice 30T which is IP 55 rated, so it can fly in adverse weather conditions. While it was a heavy investment from us, it also doubles up to be our  Search and Rescue drone.

Who can carry out a drone UAV roof inspection?

Only a CAA approved Drone UAV operator can operate the drone. The qualifications need to be fully supported by insurance and flight plan, aligned with the CAA regulations.

Do you need a flight plan to carry out a roof survey?

Before carrying out any work with a drone we complete a flight plan. The flight plan consists of information about the area of the proposed flight and detailed risk assessments and method statements relating to the flight. It also details the proposed flight path, height of the proposed flight and details of the proposed drone that will be flown, and any details of a backup drone.

All of the afore contribute to a safe flight detailing any risks and associated mitigations implemented.

We take into consideration the roof type, shape, and any obstacles. There could be a satellite dish as an example, or chimney that could risk our Visual Line of Sight (VLOS).

There could be flight restrictions of the airspace that need to be taken into consideration

A well thought out flight plan will ensure the safety of the drone and pilot, and any passers-by, and any person or animal that could be at risk in the planning phase. All procedures carried out to ensure a safe flight.

How did Ace High Drone Specialists start?

Ace High started as its founder Simon Hardman was raising money for the Ukraine with one of his Ukraine colleagues. UAV’s were on the shopping list so as funds were being raised, the UAV’s were being purchased.

As part of the setup before being shipped to Ukraine, we had to download the firmware, and fly the drone to make sure it was all working correctly. At that point we would ship out to the Ukraine with our logistics team.

However, when testing, Simon decided to get all of his licenses up to and including the Operational Authorisation from the CAA and convert his skills into the drone business it is today.

Who are you insured with?

We are insured with Coverdrone. They are the market leaders of drone insurers here in the UK.

Flight Category - Flying Class C0 Drones in the A1 Subcategory – Under 250 grams

C0 drones are small and include toy drones;

  • Under 250g maximum take-off mass;
  • Maximum speed of 19m/s (approx. 42.5mph);
  • Cannot be flown more than 120m (400ft) from the closest point of the earth surface at point of take-off

What training and certification do I need to fly a C0 Drone?

  • UK Drone Registration required if camera equipped
  • Read manufacturer user manual
  • Online training for Commercial operators
  • Online foundation test for Commercial operators

Flight Category - Flying Class C1 Drones in the A1 Subcategory – Under 900 grams

C1 drones are heavier than C0 drones and cover more commercial UAV’s;

  • Under 900g in maximum take-off mass (MTOM), or are made and perform in a way that if they collide with a person, the energy transmitted will be less than 80 Joules;
  • They have a maximum speed of 19m/s (approx. 42.5 mph)
  • They are designed and constructed so as to minimise injury to people;
  • The standards also cover other aspects such as noise limits, height limits and requirements for remote identification and geo-awareness systems.

What training and certification do I need to fly a C1 Drone?

  • UK Drone Registration required
  • Read manufacturer user manual
  • Online training

Flight Category - Flying Class C2 Drones in the A2 Subcategory ‘close to’ – Under 4kg

C2 class drones:

  • Are less than 4kg in weight;
  • They are designed and constructed so as to minimise injury to people;
  • They are equipped with a low-speed mode which limits the maximum speed to 3m/s (approx. 6.7 mph) when selected by the remote pilot;
  • The standards also cover other aspects such as noise limits (but different from Class C1), height limits and requirements for remote identification and geo-awareness systems, plus additional requirements if it is to be used during tethered flight.

What training and certification do I need to fly a C2 Drone?

  • UK Drone Registration required
  • Read manufacturer user manual
  • Online training
  • Online foundation test
  • Self-practical training
  • A2 Certificate of Competence theoretical test (CofC Test)

Where can I find the most up to date drone Rules and Regulations?

The first port of call needs to be the CAA Web Site. The most up to date information is posted here and is a valuable tool for constant updates.

Where can I apply for a Flier ID and Operator ID?

If you click on this link it will take you to the part of the CAA's web site where the application can be made.

Where do I start to begin my training?

Well, the first thing you will need to do is 'create an account'. When the account is created using your email address as your user name and your preferred password, you can select the training course you prefer, and start straight away.
